Laser Printer Emissions Deemed as an Occupational Risk

Added: 7 April, 2008

QUT has released information on a study that found that laser printers emit large amounts of tiny particles (PM2.5) into the air.

The respirable fraction of the particles emitted can result respiratory irritation to effects on the cardiovascular system and cancer, says author Professor Lidia Morawska from QUT.

It is unknown at present, the exact chemical makeup of the particles and how they are released. But good office ventilation is strongly recommended in order to minimise the chances of particles entering the respiratory tracts of employees.

From the group of laser printers tested, the researchers classified 17 of the 62 printers as "high particle emitters".
