Queensland Laboratory gets AQIS Permit to import Quarantine Soil Samples

Queensland Laboratory received its AQIS permit (Ref: IP08016772) to import quarantine soil samples from all over the world. The main reason for the permit application was as a requirement for the analysis of UNMIT Soil samples potentially containing asbestos, however the business development team at Queensland Laboratory has had the permit extended to allow for the importation of soil samples for all forms of analysis. In January of 2008, Queensland Laboratory proudly opened the new Hazchem facility in Arundel Industrial Estate on the sunny Gold Coast. With a fully operational environmental and occupational laboratory, the new facility is state of the art and will allow the Gold Coast community to have access to emergency exposure testing equipment and also the 2nd unit on the Queensland Laboratory emergency response team. Asbestos Disease Projections Too Low

Science Daily - Current predictions of the future incidence of asbestos-related disease have been substantially underestimated, according to new modelling to be presented in Melbourne today by an epidemiologist from The Australian National University.
The analysis by Dr Mark Clements, from the National Centre for Epidemiology and Population Health, and colleagues shows that the peak number of cases of mesothelioma, a deadly cancer caused by asbestos, will occur four years later and the future total incidence may be in excess of 35 per cent higher than existing models would have predicted. $3 Billion Hospital Building Program On Track - Gold Coast University Hospital

Planning is on track for new hospitals on the Gold and Sunshine Coasts and the new Queensland Children’s Hospital, Health Minister Stephen Robertson said today.
